Using some of the double printed photographs that were less successful I thought I’d have a go at transforming something 2D (my photographs) something 3D.
Experiment 1: Pop-up
My first experiment was creating a ‘pop-up’. I started by reading.
I then made three templates to test my skills…it was trickier than I thought. It is easy to cut or fold in the wrong place!
The next step was to trace the shape of the one on the right. I did this to size so that I could lay it over the photographs and pick one that suited that particular design.
Here is my first pop-up!
It is also possible to stand it up the other way so that the ‘pop’ is at the top. But I didn’t think this worked so well.
However, I did think it looked quite interesting when displayed as an ‘L’.
Experiment 2: Elevated layers
The second idea I tried was to create a 3D effect by cutting out sections of the photograph and then raising them to create the 3D effect.
I began by cutting out an irregular shaped piece from the centre of the photograph. When cutting, I followed some of the lines in the photograph. I then had two pieces.
From the second piece I then cutting out a third piece. It was a square. By accident I realised it looked better when I turned it 180 degrees!
I then used double sided foam tape to raise the second and third pieces above the first. It ended up looking like this.
I showed these 3D creations to the group at the same time as the 2D photographs. I think the general feeling was that the photographs looked better 2D. But I’ll do some more experimentation as I think something interesting might emerge. Does anyone have any suggestions?
