Folio - stripes with relief and reflection

As I have said on numerous occasions I get a lot of inspiration from Sean Scully. Over many years, his abstract works have used stripes as the key motif.

Precious, 1987
Magdalena, 1993
As a photographer, I too am intrigued by the stripes that I find in the natural and built environment. And this semester I am interested to develop my work in this regard. In this instance the exploration is backgrounded by the idea of edge.

The foundation of this work is 16 prints of the same photograph (of a corrugated iron fence). Each photograph is 24.5 x 17.5. The combined measurement is 140cm x 49cm/55” x 19”.

In the top 8 photographs (standing vertically), 8 different photographs have been printed in black and white over the foundation photographs.

In the bottom 8 photographs, the same 8 photos have been double printed in colour, then mounted on foam board and attached as reliefs (9cm x 9cm/3.5” x 3.5”) onto the foundation photographs.

When displayed on a shelf, as above, the vertical photographs mirror or reflect the horizontal photographs.

It would also be possible to exhibit this on a wall with one group under the other or as two separate works.

Another option would be to stand the work on a shelf, folded concertina style, with one group of eight behind the other group of eight (displayed so that you walked around the work) or as two separate works on a shelf.
