Dear Anne,

Great to catch up and hear all about your new works and your progression - great to see how much you are working on.

As promised, please see some key ideas we spoke of and also artists that will be useful for you to see.

Artists
  • Antony Cairns
  • Esher
  • Brigitte Riley
  • Abigail Reynolds
  • Wolfgang Tillmans - 3D work (Lighter)
  • David Benjamin Sherry
3D Development
  • Shifting perspectives  - optical illusions
  • Pushing the boundaries of depth - looking to choose parts of the image to pull out and make 3D
  • Investigations into the presentations of the work/ glass, framing etc
  • Installation of works - shelves, a book format with Japanese or French folds
I look forward to seeing your next set of developments and speak with you on Friday 7th July at 09:00 GMT.

All the best for the next few weeks,
Melinda.

My notes

We talked again about Dirk Stewen's work and in particular about the group of seven works that I found very moving.

I made a note of the characteristics as we discussed it:
  • collection of works equals one work
  • different sizes and papers
  • different images all under-woven with a strong sensability
  • curves
  • physical line
  • nods to flora and fauna
  • appreciation of material
  • flow of consciousness
  • revealing self

Wouldn't I be pleased with myself if I could achieve that!

Folio preparation

We talked about the different works I'm planning for my folio.

Cut-outs

  • strength
  • blue/black palette
  • line
  • subtlety, having a gentle hand
  • geometry
  • form over function
  • intuitive, unexplainable in words
  • multi-layering
  • presentation
  • creating a sculpture in a frame

Concertina/accordion
  • achieving 3D
  • Japanese and French folds
  • maintaining intimacy
  • creating depth by bringing light forward and dark back by selecting the pop-out cuts
  • shifting perceptions and perspectives (Escher)
  • optical illusion, avoiding cliché
Artists for inspiration include:
Riley: sense of 3D, colour
Sherry: playing with planes
Tilman: paper folds, shifts
Reynolds: using found photographs, becoming 3D

Layered transparencies
  • not so slick, how can they be improved
  • better use of depth
  • reduce, reduce, reduce
  • reduce amount of info, remove parts, look for simplification

Double-printed photographs
  • printing poster size
  • stick on wall

We also talked about theoretical ideas

  • the psychology of shapes and images
  • illusion, perspective, abstraction, reading images
