My idea is to use multiple images taken in laneways to create collages of ‘new’ photographic fences.
I was inspired by the work, titled Opus Rouen, painted by a Danish artist Robert Mortensen which was reproduced in black and white in Constructivism by George Rickey.
In the chapter titled ‘New Ideas of Space’ Rickey notes that in Opus Rouen, Mortensen ‘implies folding but with ambiguous overlappings and other perspective devices’.
I was drawn to:
- the combination of geometric shapes
- the range of tonal qualities
- the panoramic shape
- the sense of movement
- the rhythm.
As I was photographing fences Mortensen’s work was in the back of my mind. This is my first experiment with this idea.
Recently, when reading, I came across this work by Bridget Riley which has provided me with further inspiration. (Last semester, Melinda suggested that I look at Bridget Riley’s work and Sean Scully says that he drew inspiration from Bridget’s ‘paintings that have a low optical hum’.)
The caption under the image (in Art Fundamentals p53) reads:
‘Bridget Riley, Evoë 1, 1999-2000. Oil on linen, 6 x 19ft (194 x 580 cm). Shapes related in colour, value, and curving edges create a dramatic sweep across the composition. Interest is added to the rhythmic movement and ordered beat by changing the size and type of shape and the diagonal accents…’
