Inspiration: Antony Cairns

Antony Cairns

Cairns’ website features a number of different projects. Most are focused on one city or a group of cities, and most are shot at night.

The Transitions project  (http://www.antony-cairns.co.uk/transitions/v1b15ewwg0rqi8ijncz06qzvdno3tewas interesting for me as it was not about a place and more abstract than the other projects. Here Cairns has used e-book technology where he
‘harnesses the electronic ink (hence EI) used by tablet computers to create what Cairns calls “new daguerreotypes”. (Gemma Padley,Antony Cairns experiments with the old and the new, in ??? January 2016.)
He re-photographed from the e-readers and then printed on out-of-date b&w photographic paper exploring the connections between old and new technologies.

Also interesting, giving my recent folio, were installation shots with Perspex and transparencies: http://www.antony-cairns.co.uk/artworks/. I really like the way the Perspex sheets are very think, much larger than the works. Some are leaning against the wall while others ar free standing. It gave a very sculptural feeling to the installation.

Also interesting in the installation were the different kinds of shelving used including a very one very long shelf.

Cairns has also been involved in a group project where the outcome was 5 books called Abstracts by AM project. The book includes the works of Antony Cairns, Tiane Doan na Champassak, Olivier Pin-Fat, Ester Vonplon ans Daisuke Yokota.

This is a most interesting example of an abstract photobook. Thinking about constructing a narrative with abstract photographs the things I noticed were:

-      starts with small images
-      b&w and colour interspersed
-      all colour pages are full bleed, some on left, others on right
-      recurring motifs
-      contrasting images
-      blank pages
-      a variety of image shapes and sizes
-      a variety of page layouts

What things do you see?
