Folio: a visual starting point

'Just begin!' I said to myself.

So I headed to North Melbourne, a suburb with diverse architecture. I thought it might be a good place to take some photographs to start my edge adventure. My goal was to make a series of photographs that I could discuss with the group. These are the images I shared last Friday.

A few days later, on the way to Womadelaide, I was reading the introduction to Rexer's The Edge of Vision. In discussing Gordon Matta-Clark's film Splitting, Rexer observed that 'Although divided only be a small gap, it is suddenly penetrated by light...light is unlocked, received and revealed...'. This gave me an idea - at Womadelaide, I would photograph light as it came through barriers and boundaries.

I also showed these images to Megan and Kristian last Friday.

So we looked at them and talked. The ideas I took away from the conversation were:

  • aim for photographs that are not so specific
  • reduce the amount of information
  • think about flaws, gaps, the in-between
  • try out film cameras e.g. Mamiya and Holga
  • consider taking double exposures with 1/2 to 3/4 exposure for each shot
  • check out Harry Callahan
  • if I'm searching for an ephemeral feel then choose a method that suits.
